AO Trauma Orthogeriatrics: Learning app for the treatment of people with fractures

With the education app “AO Trauma Orthogeriatrics”, surgeons and healthcare professionals can test and learn their medical know-how. Neofonie Mobile designed, developed and enhanced the app for the AO Foundation for iOS and Android.

App relaunch

The AO Foundation promotes knowledge transfer among surgeons and the interactive community of medical professionals. Especially in the specialties for trauma, spine, craniomaxillofacial and animal surgery, the know-how is to be trained with the help of educational and consulting services. Neofonie Mobile was commissioned to develop the education app AO Trauma Orthogeriatric for this purpose back in 2013. In the following years, several smaller and larger updates were carried out. In 2019, Neofonie Mobile has comprehensively updated the app and raised it to a new level.

AO Trauma Orthogeriatric App

The AO Trauma Orthogeriatric App is an education app that provides assistance in the treatment of patients with fractures. The content for this is presented through a series of question-answer paths, providing the user with supportive information during diagnosis as well as the planning phase and execution of surgical procedures. The offering is primarily aimed at surgeons and trainees, but is also suitable for physicians and specialists in other healthcare disciplines. The app is available for both smartphones and tablets running iOS or Android.

Hybrid app

The “AO Trauma Orthogeriatric” app has been designed from the outset as a hybrid app based on HTML5. This offers the advantage of using both native functions of the smartphone or tablet, such as connectivity status functions and access to file systems, among others, as well as having the flexibility of a web application. The code base is also equally usable for iOS and Android.

Interface design

The interface design was developed in close cooperation with the customer and focuses on the content to guide the user easily through the respective learning mode. The user selects one of the learning modules on the start screen and follows the steps after selection. The design is based on the cross-platform approach and is set up for smartphones in portrait format and for tablets in portrait and landscape format. Individual adaptations to the respective operating system have been virtually dispensed with.

Version 1.0

The concept of the app is based on four learning modules: osteoporosis, delirium, anticoagulation and pain management, which are already presented on the entry page. Through yes/no answer pages and list views, the user is guided through the respective learning content. In addition, navigation, an information page, and a glossary of references and abbreviations have been integrated.

Current version

In 2019, the app underwent a comprehensive relaunch. In addition to the integration of the new branding of the AO Foundation, a new learning unit on fall prevention was added. Furthermore, content has been renewed and the technology has been updated to the current “Cordova” version 8.1.1.
